ECO Scattering Meters
Single-angle Backscattering Meter
The
ECO BB measures scattering at 117 degrees, the angle determined as a minimum
convergence point for variations in the volume scattering function (VSF)
induced by suspended materials and water itself. As a result, the signal
measured by this meter is less determined by the type and size of the materials
in the water and is more directly correlated to the concentration of
the materials. Conversely, the meter provides unparalleled accuracy for any
single-angle measurement in determining the optical backscattering coefficient: an
important parameter for remote sensing and in many in-water bio-optical
applications.

Three-wavelength Backscattering Meter
Developed under the auspices of the National Oceanographic
Partnership Program, the ECO Triplet provides optical backscattering measurements at 470, 532 and 650 nm in its standard configuration. Meters are available with
a centroid angle of scattering at 117 degrees.

Volume Scattering Function Meters
The angular distribution of scattered
radiation of the backward hemisphere is important in the interpretation
of remote sensing measurements, investigations of particle shape, and
models of visibility in seawater. Motivated by the need to better understand
the relationship of water-leaving radiance with backscattering into the
same direction, the three-angle ECO VSF measurement allows determination of specific
angles of backscattering through interpolation and extrapolation from
90 to 180 degrees.
Three angle, Single-wavelength VSF
The ECO VSF measures the optical scattering
at three distinct angles: 100, 125, and 150 degrees, thus providing
the shape of the Volume Scattering Function (VSF) throughout the backscattering
region.

650 nm, thus providing the shape of the Volume Scattering Function (VSF)
throughout its angular domain.

Nine Wavelength Configurable Scattering Meter
The ECO BB-9 can be customized with any of the ECO line of optical configurations. For example, scattering can be measured at seven wavelengths as well as CDOM and chlorophyll fluorescence. Further customization is possible by adding pressure and temperature sensors to provide a stand-alone profiling tool.
